HALLOWEEN!!!
Halloween is always such a treat at our house. All the grandkids come over so excited about going trick-o-treating. This year was no exception, even though it was on a school night and Dallin started school this year....we still all had a great time. Even little Hailey really got into the going house to house to collect yummy sweet treats. It has been extra fun this year as Will, Tammy and the girls are living here for a couple of weeks as they get ready to move into their first home. So exciting!!! It has been so much fun having the pitter patter of little feet in our house. It has certainly been a busy time but one with wonderful memories!

Kids Say the Darndest Things!!!
My daughter Valerie is expecting Miss Jessica Around the 1st of December. I guess this has given her kids something to think about as they see her growing belly and are beginning to see the baby move. Kate (4) asked me the other day "Nana, did you ever have a baby?" I replied, "Why yes I did". She looked puzzled and asked "What did you do with it?". Needless to say...she didn'y buy the part about the fact that her "mom" was my little baby.
I took care of Kate and Jace today as Valerie had a doctor's appointment. I can tell that Kate is really thinking a lot about what it means to grow up. Kate (4) told her friend Jace (3) "When you grow up...just your feet get big but your head stays the same size". She thought a minute then added "I guess that your head could look different but your voice stays the same". How Precious! What can I say? I love being a Nana...you learn so much that you never thought about before.

What a Difference a Week Makes!!!
Last Saturday Craig had a very bad accident that landed him in the hospital for nearly three days. He had started out the day by going to the Church Welfare Building to volunteer. He had left a note on the door for me to call him when I got up. I found the note when I was on my way out the door to go grocery shopping with my daughter Valerie. I gave him a quick call and he said that he would meet me at home afterward. After grocery shopping at Sprouts (our favorite place for veggies, fruits, and gluten-free foods) we went to H.E.B. to finish off the shopping for things that are generally cheaper there. We had just gotten started when I got a call from home. It was Craig and he sounded as if something were terribly wrong and he asked me to come home. I knew in my heart that he was really hurt or that something was terribly wrong.
Upon coming home..I ran in to discover that he was covering his mouth with a cloth and said to take him to the hospital. I had Val call William and tell the hospital and let them know that we were on our way. When we got there...we started to piece things together. He went in to sit down and tell the receptionist what was wrong and he was bleeding through his jeans in several places. They laid him down right away and did a quick assessment and then sent him through a body x-ray of some sort. He was in shock and his chest was hurting. They reminded him that if he was going to make one phone call that it should have been 911.
After a while, we realized that he had climbed a ladder to change the air filters inside the house and was approximately 10 feet up when the ladder gave way. He fell on top of the ladder which then fell on the tile floor. He ended up with a broken nose and stitches in his nose and on his outer lip and slightly up his face. He had several stitches in his mouth, had knocked a tooth mostly out and forced most of the teeth on his left side out of position. He ended up having oral surgery to remove the tooth and they found the root and metal peg had been forced into the bone (the tooth had been crowned). After two hours, it came out in pieces and part of the bone had to be cut out. He broke his thumb and sprang all his fingers on his left hand. He had surgery on his left hand to release the pressure so that he wouldn't have permanant nerve damage. His hand is now in a cast for six weeks. He has stitches in his left leg about two inches in length. He was bruised everywhere and was in so much pain and he lost a lot of blood. Valerie and William came to our house and cleaned up the blood so that when we did come home that we didn't have to come home to that memory. After the hospital...it was a tough couple of days for Craig...
....And Then
......Today
......Craig was out coaching his little soccer team. What a difference a week makes. He still has to get a new tooth in front and perhaps have another fixed that was fractured but the other teeth are moving back into position. He still cannot eat solid foods but he is getting there. He walks around fine. The hand with now lots of stitches and broken thumb doesn't appear to slow him down too bad. He does get tired easy and I can tell that he is still in pain and cannot do everything that he would like to do. For example, buttons and seatbelts are still not happening.
We are so grateful for the beginning of a new week and are so grateful for a faster recovery than we had thought. It will take a while...but today on the soccer field I could tell that for the most part....people had no idea what this man had actually been through....and it is seems that it will soon be just a story.

Sad News about the little kittens
I usually like to post fun and interesting things that are happening in our family...or things that I feel will have a good outcome or at least be a good learning experience. This is really none of those things and now I wish I hadn't posted about our cat adventures. I really expected that at least one or two of the rescued kittens would survive. All of them ended up with extreme neurological problems... as it ended up..they couldn't move, were in pain, and had to be put to sleep. What we have learned is that the mother and father cats and all 4 kittens were either poisoned OR had rabies. If it is the latter ...we will all have to be treated. The results will be back the end of next week. I do know that we have had a pretty severe squirrel problem in this area and possibly someone decided to take this matter into their own hands and cut down on the population by poisoning them. I am hopeful that they wouldn't intentionally try to harm other animals and hopefully they were not aware of the potential consequences to the entire neighborhood. I do know that these sweet little kittens touched all of our lives and had adorable personalities that made us laugh and smile. A lot of effort was put into their survival and we will sure miss them and I doubt we'll ever forget them even though they were only part of our lives for such a short time.

Cats, Cats, Cats!!!
What a week!!!
Our neighbors asked us to water their plants each day that they are out of town. It has been blazing hot in Texas with record hot summer days. 104-107 degrees. They were afraid that their plants would die because of the severe heat. Craig took the first day. He was gone for quite a while as the nieghbors have a lot of plants and a beautiful yard that needs to be hand watered to conserve water and not burn up the plants. Craig came home to tell us that there were baby kittens in the neighbors yard. I went to take a look with my daughter Valerie. There were two cute little kittens alright but it was clear that something was seriously wrong with one the the kittens and they were REALLY young. Valerie took the kittens to the vet and the one we were worried about had to be put to sleep. The kittens didn't appear to have any mother cat to take care of them and the neighbors never told us about the cats. I doubt they even knew about them. Valerie decided to bottle feed the little survivor.
The next day I watered the yard and looked around real well to make sure that we hadn't missed any kittens and to also make sure that a mother cat wasn't missing babies.
Today, I went to water the yard and was very upset to find yet another baby kitten dead under a patio table. I went home and got Michael and told him to go over every inch of the yard to see if there were any more. Sure enough, we found one more kitten...scared to death and as thin as a rail. It was so skinny but ready to protect itself. That little guy wasn't going to let anyone near him and he was scared to death. (These kittens couldn't have been over 5 weeks old...if that).
I called Valerie and had her bring the little kitten that she had taken home back to help calm the new little cast away. When he saw his brother...he calmed right down and took some kitten formula out of a tiny kitten bottle. Valerie now has both kittens. I'm not sure what happened to the mother. We have a gray fox in the neighborhood and my guess it that is what happened to her.
Anyhow, it looks like for now...Valerie is taking in some little darlings. The neighbors come back tomorrow. Boy will they be surprised to find out all the adventures that took place in their yard while they were away.

My Sister's Bucket List!!!
My sister has an on-going bucket list. Some of the things sound like a lot of fun. So...I thought I would try one out for myself and talked Craig into doing it with me. He and I got away for a short vacation by ourselves in Cozemel Mexico. Craig certainly needed this long-time-coming break from work. So.........................we swam with the dolphins. How fun! We were the only two signed up for what turned out to be a life-long memory!!!
